Code Geass: Lelouch of Rebellion R2

—Review Score: 9/10—

Code Geass: Lelouch of Rebellion R2 is the continuation of the events in the first season. After a certain time skip, Lelouch is back in Ashford Academy and somehow lose his memories of season one. With a nonstandard lead character, Code Geass R2 is an interesting animé to watch.

Lelouch Lamperouge or Lelouch vi Brittania, the lead character, is somewhat dark and evil, utilizing any means necessary to accomplish his goals. And his abilities, the Geass as the series said, is a great complement to his personality. Lelouch is able to control anyone’s behaviour by using his Geass. Other characters are also memorable with their own distinct personality. Lelouch-Suzaku rivalry is also interesting with a somewhat unpredictable turn near the end of the season.

Story-wise, Code Geass R2 has a highly political theme. With a prominent rebellion against a tyrant regime portrayed throughout the season. The story manages to keep itself interesting on each episode. The pacing of each episode is just right, with a good balance of action sequence and story conveying dialogues. The strategic elements used in this series are interesting with several great battles featured throughout the season.

The character design is handled by CLAMP, with a great animation quality, if not girly-ish. The character animation matches the personality of each character in a CLAMP way. Overall animation quality is also high with somewhat simple mecha designs. However, the music used in Code Geass R2 doesn’t quite live up to other aspects’ quality. The music tracks are not that good, if not annoying, especially on the opening/ending themes.

Considering all of the aspects in this series, Code Geass: Lelouch of Rebellion R2 is a great sequel with a satisfying closure. The only downside is the music used in this game, but it’s easily forgivable considering the high quality offered on other aspects. This is a must-see series for animé fans.
