Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

—Review Score: 8/10—

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is the latest installation of EA’s staple RTS game. It’s been a while since the last iteration of the original C&C, Tiberian Sun, and yet suddenly C&C got numbered, three… As the staple of EA’s RTS spawning numerous spin-offs (Red Alert and General series), C&C brings back old formula into the equation. There is the classic GDI and Nod rivalry, but right now there is a third faction, the alien Scrin.

Gameplay-wise, it’s the same C&C you love and hate. There are still that build-then-place-it and no unit caps, but there are also some new elements into the gameplay. There are multiple building tab/queue available, so you can build two or more power plants at the same time, given you already create the new structure required to let you have multiple build tabs. There’s also some weird change on the space key, it no longer cycle through completed unit training, so you’ll need to click in the minimap or press a camera bookmark to select your new units. This can introduce an extra management in the heat of the battle to send reinforcement to a specific point of the battle. Campaigns are pretty much C&C style, including the cheesy live action sequence here and there.

The visual presentation of C&C3 will depends on the setting, this game is not that demanding, as long as you keep the visual settings on the low side. But as a consequence, putting everything in a low settings will create a barren, poorly textured visuals. On the high settings though, C&C becomes a resource hog and consequently looks gorgeous. It’s pretty much up to the standard of current RTS games, with most of the visual aspects evolving from C&C Generals. The lighting is arguably better in this game, especially on the all flashy Scrin faction. On the sound department, Tiberium Wars delivers itself pretty well. There is a distinction between each unit available, from its response line and also from the movement and attack sounds.

All in all, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is still a C&C game with all its old elements. It only introduces minor improvement on the gameplay, however it is still a highly enjoyable game. And more importantly, it sucks you in, deeply… Especially if you’re an RTS fan.
